《While We Were Fitted Together》
A puzzle operates on the premise that different pieces will find their designated places and return to a single, complete whole.
The pieces of this work, too, were once seamlessly interlocked within a shared frame. However, as the Air Sculpey dried, each piece shrunk and warped in its own way, leaving distinct gaps and distortions across four puzzles created from the exact same mold.
When the dried pieces are returned to their original places, traces of having once fit together remain, yet they no longer interlock as seamlessly as before. The more forcefully one tries to align them, the more certain pieces lift, get pushed aside, or end up left outside the frame altogether. Sentences written across the pieces in pencil span these misaligned edges and empty spaces, continuing across the gaps.
Existences that were once together transform in different directions over time, and they may no longer fit in the ways they used to.
Do the remaining gaps between the pieces represent the distance grown between us, or do they signify the necessary space required to remain together in our changed forms?
Re-encountering one another after having changed, is this gap a distance, or a room to breathe?
