Younser Lee (b.1994, Seoul, South Korea) is doing various works as an artist, educator, and director in South Korea.
Lee’s works have been exhibited by galleries and museums in the United States, South Korea, and Europe. Lee holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Sculpture) that she received at Kookmin University in South Korea and a Master's degree in Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, USA.
My work begins with the objects and experiences of everyday life.
I aim to bring unnoticed actions, emotions, and underlying awareness and conflicts into the realm of art, offering a new perspective and transforming them into opportunities for change and healing.
My pieces are primarily presented in forms that allow the audience to touch and participate, enabling them to become active participants rather than passive viewers. In particular, works centered on tactile interaction go beyond mere visual appreciation, creating spaces where the audience can physically feel and experience art. The moment participants touch the work, their personal experiences intersect with the artwork, opening up new possibilities. I believe that this process can serve as a bridge, connecting people and linking individuals to society.
My approach to art is that it serves as both a language and a method for understanding people. My work encourages participants to reflect on themselves and redefine their relationships with others. Art that is experienced physically brings about small but meaningful changes in daily life. I believe that these small changes will accumulate, gradually moving people and ultimately sparking the transformation of the world into a warmer, more connected place.
I hope for art to exist closer to people’s lives. Through the experiences my work provides, I aim to break down the physical and emotional distance between art and the audience, reaching into the participants’ emotions and memories. I hope for my art to share comfort, solidarity, and understanding, and to touch the lives of many.
내 작업은 일상의 사물과 경험에서 출발한다. 사람들 일상 속 가볍게, 혹은 무겁게 스쳐 지나가는 행동과 정서, 그 안에 담긴 문제의식과 갈등을 예술로 끌어와 다시 바라보고, 이를 새로운 시선과 관계 맺기의 가능성으로 전환하고자 한다.
특히 촉각적 경험이 관람객의 감정적 공감과 사회적 연대 형성에 어떤 영향을 줄 수 있을지에 관심이 많다. 시각적 감상의 대상으로 예술을 넘어, 나는 사람들이 신체적이고 심리적으로 적극적으로 참여하고 체험할 수 있는 예술에 대해 고민한다. 시각적인 감상을 넘어서, 촉각을 중심으로 한 감각적 경험은 관람객을 수동적인 감상자가 아니라 능동적인 경험자로 전환시키고, 그 안에서 작품과 경험자 사이의 진짜 감정적 교감이 일어난다고 생각한다.
그래서 내 작업은 관람객이 직접 만지고 참여할 수 있는 형태로 제안된다. 촉각을 통한 상호작용은 몸으로 느끼고 경험하는 새로운 예술적 공간을 만든다. 작품을 만지는 그 순간, 개인의 경험과 예술이 만나는 지점에서 새로운 가능성이 열리고, 이 경험이 사람과 사람, 그리고 사람과 세상을 이어주는 다리가 될 수 있다고 믿는다.
내게 미술은 사람을 이해하기 위한 언어이자 방식이다. 작업을 통해 경험자가 자기 자신을 들여다보고, 타인과의 관계를 다시 생각해보길 바란다. 몸으로 경험할 수 있는 예술은 일상 속에서 작지만 분명한 변화를 일으킬 수 있고, 그 작은 변화들이 결국 사회에 연결과 움직임을 확장하는 계기가 될 수 있다고 생각한다.
나는 미술이 사람들의 삶 가까이에 있길 바란다. 작품과 사람 사이의 물리적·심리적 거리를 줄이고, 감각적인 상호작용을 통해 경험자의 감정과 기억 깊숙한 곳에 닿는 예술. 여유와 연대, 이해를 나눌 수 있는 예술. 내 작업이 그런 경험을 전하고, 더 많은 이들과 연결되길 바란다.
