Before numbers were defined, how did we understand quantity and presence?
In contemporary society, objects are often defined through numerical terms, such as how many people they are meant to serve. Numbers appear to offer clarity, order, and efficiency.
Yet within nature, numbers hold no intrinsic authority.
They do not exist as fixed truths, but as human constructs shaped by convenience and agreement. What we call measurement is never neutral. It reflects the boundaries we choose to impose.
A large stone, for example, resists numerical definition.
It does not belong to a specific number of users. It can become a seat, a table, a shelter, or a gathering place, depending on who encounters it and how it is approached. Its meaning shifts through use rather than quantity.
This work asks viewers to pause and consider what numbers truly represent in the systems we inhabit.
Are they descriptions of reality, or tools that quietly shape how we perceive, limit, and organize the world?

숫자가 정의되기 이전, 우리는 양과 존재를 어떻게 인식했을까.
오늘날 사회에서 사물은 종종 ‘몇 인용’과 같은 수의 언어로 규정된다. 숫자는 명확함과 질서, 효율을 제공하는 것처럼 보인다.
그러나 자연 안에서 숫자는 어떤 절대적 권위도 갖지 않는다.
숫자는 고정된 진실이 아니라, 인간의 편의와 합의 속에서 만들어진 개념에 가깝다. 우리가 측정이라 부르는 행위 역시 결코 중립적이지 않으며, 세계를 바라보는 방식에 경계를 설정한다.
예를 들어 하나의 커다란 돌은 숫자로 규정되기를 거부한다.
그 돌은 몇 명을 위한 것인지 정해져 있지 않으며, 마주하는 사람과 사용 방식에 따라 의자이기도 하고, 탁자이기도 하며, 쉼터나 모임의 중심이 되기도 한다. 그 의미는 수량이 아니라 관계 속에서 끊임없이 변한다.
이 작업은 우리가 살아가는 체계 안에서 숫자가 무엇을 의미하는지 다시 묻는다.
숫자는 현실을 설명하는 언어일까, 아니면 우리가 세계를 인식하고 제한하며 조직하는 방식일까.
