The <Timeless Pots series> consists of four interconnected works, all of which reflect on changes that unfold over time. Through this series, I seek to speak about impermanence and loss. By presenting the temporary act of clay pots slowly dissolving and disappearing, I trace the way emotions flow and shift within processes of change.
This work developed organically, without a clearly defined plan or goal from the beginning. It originated from a personal experience of loss, the death of my grandfather, which led me to reflect on death and absence. As the work continued to change and take on a sense of vitality, it gradually began to contain a sense of future and possibility. Within this process, I discovered the potential for positive emotions to emerge.
Each piece in the series holds the potential to transform into something else, and for this reason, the work exists in an unfinished state. Every stage of transformation in <Timeless Pots> becomes both a marker of the past and a clue toward the future. These changes allow my emotions to flow outward while remaining as a form of record. Through this series, I came to realize that even if all things move toward death and disappearance, my attitude and state of mind toward that flow can instead define a cycle of life and continuity.

After <Timeless Pot 1> (2019), I sought to preserve the traces left behind in order to observe the role of chance within change. This led to the creation of <Timeless Pot 2> (2019). Marks left by plants, soil, and water remained on the canvas like drawings. In this work, I fired the melted clay pots, attempting to give form to the randomness of transformation and the meaning of death.
Because the unfired clay pots were extremely fragile and easily broken, I found myself questioning how they might be brought back to life. In this process, I began to reflect on the human desire to hold onto and preserve memories. I decided to fire the pots and transform them into objects of memory, or monuments. This act became a symbolic gesture that encapsulated my experiences and emotions.
<Timeless Pot 3> (2019), produced afterward, emerged as an attempt to push beyond the limits of unexpected change. Through this work, I felt a desire to move toward the next stage of the series.
Finally, in <Timeless Pot 4> (2019), I sought to give a different form of life to the plant remnants used in <Timeless Pot 1>. I preserved them in transparent glass jars traditionally used in Korea to store jam, alcohol, or fruit for long periods of time. Through this work as well, I continued to explore the possibilities of transformation and the meaning of death.
Although Timeless Pot 4 marks the final stage of the series, the remnants inside the glass jars continue to change and generate new environments. Moisture, mold, and decaying plants form a new ecosystem within the jars. Through this process, the work continues to feel like a living presence.
〈Timeless Pots 시리즈〉는 네 개의 연작으로 이루어져 있으며, 모든 작업은 시간이 흐르면서 일어나는 변화에 대한 사유를 담고 있다.
나는 이 작업을 통해 사물의 덧없음과 상실을 이야기하고자 한다. 점토 화분이 서서히 녹아 사라지는 일시적인 행위를 통해, 변화 속에서 감정이 흘러가는 과정을 담았다.
이 작업은 처음부터 명확한 계획이나 목적 없이 자연스럽게 전개되었다.
할아버지의 죽음이라는 개인적인 경험을 계기로 죽음과 상실이라는 개념을 고찰하며 시작되었지만,
작업이 끊임없이 변화하고 생명력이 생기면서 오히려 미래와 가능성을 품게 되었고, 그 속에서 나는 긍정적인 감정의 가능성을 발견할 수 있었다.
각 연작은 무언가로 다시 변화할 수 있는 잠재성을 지니고 있으며, 그렇기 때문에 이 작업은 완결되지 않은 상태로 존재한다.
〈Timeless Pots〉의 모든 변화의 단계들은 과거의 지표이자 미래의 단서가 되어, 내 감정을 흘려보내는 동시에 하나의 기록으로 남게 된다.
이 시리즈를 통해 나는, 비록 모든 것이 죽음과 소멸을 향해 나아간다 해도, 그 흐름을 바라보는 나의 태도와 마음가짐이 오히려 삶과 영원의 순환을 정의할 수 있다는 사실을 깨닫게 되었다.

〈Timeless Pot 1〉(2019) 이후, 나는 그 흔적들을 보존함으로써 변화 속의 우연성을 관찰하고자 했고, 그 결과 〈Timeless Pot 2〉(2019)를 제작하게 되었다. 식물, 흙, 물의 자국들이 캔버스 위에 드로잉처럼 남겨진 흔적이 되었고, 나는 이 작업에서 녹아버린 점토 화분들을 소성하여 변화의 우연성과 죽음의 의미를 형상화하고자 했다.
소성 전의 점토 화분은 매우 연약하고 쉽게 부숴졌기 때문에 나는 그것들을 어떻게 하면 다시 살릴 수 있을까 고민했고, 그 과정에서 사람들이 기억을 붙잡고 간직하려는 태도를 떠올리게 되었다.
그래서 나는 화분들을 소성하여 기억의 오브제(기념물)로 남기기로 결정했고, 이 과정은 나의 경험과 감정을 담는 하나의 상징이 되었다.
이후 제작된 〈Timeless Pot 3〉 (2019)는 예상치 못한 변화의 한계를 넘어보고자 한 도전의 결과였으며, 이 작업을 통해 나는 다음 단계로 나아가고 싶은 욕망을 느꼈다.
마지막으로 나는 〈Timeless Pot 4〉 (2019)에서 〈Timeless Pot 1〉에서 사용된 식물 잔여물에게 다른 생명력을 찾아주고자 한국에서 잼이나 술, 과일 등을 오랜 시간 보관할 때 사용하는 투명한 유리병에 담아 보존하였다. 이 작업을 통해서도 나는 여전히 변화의 가능성과 죽음의 의미를 탐구하고자 했다.
비록 〈Timeless Pot 4〉는 시리즈의 마지막 단계였지만, 유리병 속의 잔여물은 계속해서 변화하고 새로운 환경을 만들어냈다.
습기, 곰팡이, 썩어가는 식물들이 유리병 안에서 하나의 새로운 생태계를 형성했고, 나는 이 작업이 여전히 살아 있는 존재처럼 느껴졌다.
