The <Timeless Pots> series consists of four related bodies of work, each exploring the theme of transformation through the passage of time. In this series, I reflect on the impermanence of existence, focusing on the act of dissolving clay pots as a metaphor for loss. While working on these pieces, the series unfolded organically—without a fixed plan or expectation.
The project began with the concept of death and loss, inspired by the passing of my grandfather. However, as the clay forms slowly dissolved and changed, I began to discover potential and hope within the process itself. Each piece carries the possibility of becoming something new. As such, this series is never truly finished. Each stage of transformation becomes both a record of the past and a suggestion of the future, allowing me to process and release personal emotions through the act of making.
Even though everything inevitably moves toward disappearance, I’ve come to understand that our mindset can reshape this path into a cycle—one of life, renewal, and eternity.

After completing <Timeless Pot 1> (2019), I decided to preserve the residue on the canvas, resulting in <Timeless Pot 2> (2019).
The traces of plants, soil, and water stains left behind resembled a drawing, capturing a moment of organic change. I also collected and fired the disintegrated clay pots from <Timeless Pot 1>—fragile and fading before firing—to explore the concept of memory preservation. In this way, the fired remnants became mementos, holding emotional and symbolic meaning. This transformation led to <Timeless Pot 3> (2019), and with it, a desire to further confront and embrace the unpredictable nature of change.
Lastly, I created <Timeless Pot 4> (2019) by preserving the plant residue from <Timeless Pot 1> in a glass jar. In Korea, such jars are typically used for fermenting jams, liquors, or preserving fruits over time. By using this familiar vessel, I wanted to reflect on the tension between preservation and decay—between holding on and letting go. Even though this piece marked the final step in the series, the contents inside continue to evolve. The humidity, mold, and decaying plant matter have created a new environment, reinforcing the idea that this work is still alive, still changing.
〈Timeless Pots 시리즈〉는 네 개의 연작으로 이루어져 있으며, 모든 작업은 시간이 흐르면서 일어나는 변화에 대한 사유를 담고 있습니다.
나는 이 작업을 통해 사물의 덧없음과 상실을 이야기합니다. 점토 화분이 서서히 녹아 사라지는 일시적인 행위를 통해, 변화 속에서 감정이 흘러가는 과정을 담았습니다.
이 작업은 처음부터 명확한 계획이나 목적 없이 자연스럽게 전개되었습니다.
할아버지의 죽음이라는 개인적인 경험을 계기로 죽음과 상실이라는 개념을 고찰하며 시작되었지만,
작업이 끊임없이 변화하고 생명력이 생기면서 오히려 미래와 가능성을 품게 되었고, 그 속에서 나는 긍정적인 감정의 가능성을 발견할 수 있었습니다.
각 연작은 무언가로 다시 변화할 수 있는 잠재성을 지니고 있으며, 그렇기 때문에 이 작업은 완결되지 않은 상태로 존재합니다.
〈Timeless Pots〉의 모든 변화의 단계들은 과거의 지표이자 미래의 단서가 되어, 내 감정을 흘려보내는 동시에 하나의 기록으로 남게 됩니다.
이 시리즈를 통해 나는, 비록 모든 것이 죽음과 소멸을 향해 나아간다 해도, 그 흐름을 바라보는 나의 태도와 마음가짐이 오히려 삶과 영원의 순환을 정의할 수 있다는 사실을 깨닫게 되었습니다.
〈Timeless Pot 1〉(2019) 이후, 나는 그 흔적들을 보존함으로써 변화 속의 우연성을 관찰하고자 했고,
그 결과 〈Timeless Pot 2〉(2019)를 제작하게 되었습니다. 식물, 흙, 물의 자국들이 캔버스 위에 드로잉처럼 남겨진 흔적이 되었고, 나는 이 작업에서 녹아버린 점토 화분들을 소성하여 변화의 우연성과 죽음의 의미를 형상화하고자 했습니다.
소성 전의 점토 화분은 매우 연약하고 쉽게 부숴졌기 때문에 나는 그것들을 어떻게 하면 다시 살릴 수 있을까 고민했고, 그 과정에서 사람들이 기억을 붙잡고 간직하려는 태도를 떠올리게 되었습니다.
그래서 나는 화분들을 소성하여 기억의 오브제(기념물)로 남기기로 결정했고, 이 과정은 나의 경험과 감정을 담는 하나의 상징이 되었습니다.
이후 제작된 〈Timeless Pot 3〉 (2019)는 예상치 못한 변화의 한계를 넘어보고자 한 도전의 결과였으며, 이 작업을 통해 나는 다음 단계로 나아가고 싶은 욕망을 느꼈습니다.
마지막으로 나는 〈Timeless Pot 4〉 (2019)에서 〈Timeless Pot 1〉에서 사용된 식물 잔여물에게 다른 생명력을 찾아주고자 한국에서 잼이나 술, 과일 등을 오랜 시간 보관할 때 사용하는 투명한 유리병에 담아 보존하였습니다. 이 작업을 통해서도 나는 여전히 변화의 가능성과 죽음의 의미를 탐구하고자 했습니다.
비록 〈Timeless Pot 4〉는 시리즈의 마지막 단계였지만, 유리병 속의 잔여물은 계속해서 변화하고 새로운 환경을 만들어냈습니다.
습기, 곰팡이, 썩어가는 식물들이 유리병 안에서 하나의 새로운 생태계를 형성했고, 나는 이 작업이 여전히 살아 있는 존재처럼 느껴졌습니다.
